Did you know that the Battle of Britain was coordinated from a tiny, top-secret bunker less than 10 miles from Datchet? It was here, at RAF Uxbridge, that Fighter Command’s No.11 Group Operations were controlled throughout WWII, most notably during the Battle of Britain and on D-Day. After his visit to the bunker on 15 September 1940, Winston Churchill was moved to utter the immortal phrase, ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few’.
The DVS was in the process of arranging a special members’ visit in early May to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day but sadly this has now been postponed due to government health advice to avoid unnecessary social contact.
We hope to be able to reinstate a visit later in the year, possibly for VJ Day in August, and we will keep members informed.
