Armistice Day & Remembrance Sunday

Remembering Datchet’s WWI soldiers

Datchet’s WWI Memorial commemorates 54 men from the village, most of whom were buried abroad in the great WWI cemeteries or listed on foreign memorials. What is less well known is that a dozen WWI soldiers are buried, or have memorials, in the Parish Council cemetery in Ditton Road, some only recently rediscovered. Not all of these men are remembered on the War Memorial.

For Armistice Day and Remembrance Weekend 2016, and again at the Cemetery Chapel Open Day in February 2017, Datchet Village Society drew attention to these graves and memorials, in co-operation with the Parish Council, by displaying a sheet of information about the soldier’s life near each WWI grave. To read the notices online, please click here. (You can also read more about each soldier on the Datchet Cemetery page of this website.)

Datchet Village Society has produced a leaflet ‘Datchet in the Great War 1914-1918: A Memorial Trail‘. This leaflet provides information on all the WWI soldiers remembered on the memorial on the village green, with a map showing where they all lived. It is available at The Bridge, from the DVS stall at local events, or to download here.

This year, as every year, Datchet Village Society laid a wreath at the WWI Memorial.
