80th anniversary of WWII

Britain entered WWII on 3 September 1939, 80 years ago this year. To mark this, the DVS has just started researching the stories of the 30 WWII servicemen whose names were added to Datchet’s War Memorial in 1989. The following information comes from the Roll of Honour website. If there is anything you can tell us about any of these men and their connections with Datchet, please do get in touch with us. ALLEN, Geoffrey Thornton MacArthur Allen, M.B.E.
Lieutenant Colonel 15361, 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).
Died 30 May 1940. Aged 42.
Son of Sir Walter Macarthur Allen, K.B.E., and of Lady Allen (nee Lamb) of Datchet; husband of Ruth Elaine Felicity Allen, of Salisbury.
Buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

BILYARD, Ernest Stanley
Private 5387010, 4th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
Died 27 May 1940. Aged 21.
Son of Ernest Walter and Alice Mary Bilyard, of Datchet.
No known grave. Commemorated on Dunkirk Memorial, Nord, France.

BOXALL, George Edward
Sergeant (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner) 1154278, 99 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Died 1 September 1941. Aged 21.
Son of Edward George and Daisy Ellen Boxall of Datchet.
Buried in Datchet Cemetery.

Died 14 May 1943. Aged 31.
Husband of Olive Louisa Davis of Datchet.

FEENY, George
Flight Lieutenant, Fleet Air Arm, H.M.S. Glorious, Royal Navy.
Died 8 June 1940. Aged 26.
Son of Lawrence Evelyn and Etheldreda Mary Feeny.
No known grave. Commemorated on Lee-on-Solent memorial, Hampshire.

GODDARD, Richard Henry
Captain 49339, 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. Formerly Captain, The Inns of Court Regiment.
Died 2 July 1940. Aged 46.
Son of Henry and Mary Arabella Goddard; husband of May Edwina Goddard of Datchet.

HINCKS, Maurice Thorp

Died 7 April 1941. Aged 55.
Son of James Thorp Hincks and Ethel Beatrice Hincks; husband of Mildred Duke Hincks of Datchet.

HOLSCHUMER, William Frederic Clarence

MORGAN, Ivor Kenneth

Son of Thomas Morgan and Winnifred Morgan (nee Higgins) of Dynevon, 23 Lawn Close, Datchet. Brother of  Margaret (later Mrs Hatch) and Irene (Mrs Dixon).
